The 18 mm Dehydrator Plug is a reusable silica-gel desiccant plug intended to help limit moisture exposure inside engines during storage, supporting corrosion-prevention procedures.

The plug uses silica gel that changes from blue to pink as moisture is absorbed, providing a visual indication that the desiccant requires attention. Its threaded barrel and black base are designed to twist on and off for access to the desiccant reservoir.

  • Size: 18 mm
  • Manufacturer part number: MS27215-2
  • Reusable and refillable silica-gel desiccant plug
  • Colour-change desiccant indication: blue to pink when moisture is absorbed

Overview

These plugs are used to prevent rust and corrosion in engines while in storage. Contain silica gel which turns from blue to pink when moisture is absorbed. Reusable and refillable. The pink silica gel may be reactivated (after removing from reservoir) by heating for 16 hours at 250°F.

Drying Directions

  • Oven:
  • Line a deep oven pan with foil, spread the silica evenly throughout the pan, heat oven to 300¢X and leave in the oven for about 3 hours. All the silica will turn blue or purple in color.
  • Microwave:
  • Place the silica in a thick glass backing dish, approx 1/4", and spread
  • evenly. Set the Microwave to medium and microwave it for 3 to 5 minutes,
  • and then stir around with a spoon. Repeat this step until the silica is
  • blue/purple. It takes approx 8-12 minutes to dry one pound of silica.
